In 2017, the emerging Hackney artist, Benjamin Ogbebor was awarded The Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize. Commenting on the experience his story is an inspiration and demonstration of the life changing potential of the “selfie”.
“It has, and continues to be, a great honour to be the 2017 recipient of the prestigious Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize. The experience was quite surreal and the whole process has had a huge impact on me and my family.
The prize money has helped me in purchasing art materials and the exposure I gained from the exhibition, and continue to have through the Next Generation Collection, has really helped me promote my work.
I hope other artists will be inspired to take part in the upcoming Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize competition; it is rewarding, educating, and a way for both well known and emerging artists to display artworks of interpretation or stories of themselves, emotions, and craftsmanship.
Inspired by a wide range of artistic genres and practices, my achievements have come from the simple love of human creativity. I feel so honoured to now be included on the 2019 judging panel and hope my success encourages all artists to take the chance to tell their story to the world. ” (Benjamin Ogbebor, 2018).
