Born in Bromley, Kent in 1939, Barry Newis studied at Beckenham and Bromley Schools of Art. Newis has exhibited his work extensively with South London Art Gallery, Richard Bradley and Buxton Mill Galleries. In 1990, Newis held a notable solo show with Cadogan Contemporary. Newis’s self-portrait was acquired by Ruth Borchard Collection in 2017.
An occasional figurative painter, Newis is best known for his urban and bucolic landscape paintings. Newis’s body of work is in the British tradition of impasto painting, akin to the works of Bomberg, Kossoff and Auerbach.
