Atalanta Arden-Miller's Self Portrait at 16 was acquired by the Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait prize in 2013. Born in 1996, Arden-Miller was a pupil at Westminster School at the time of the acquisition and went on to study at Oxford University's Ruskin School of Art and the New York Academy of Art. Her works have since been exhibited in London, Oxford and Manchester.
Arden-Miller is figurative painter, who cites her inspirations as Lucian Freud and Rembrandt. On being acquired by the collection Arden-Miller has said: 'Being part of a collection where you can see contemporary portrait painters thrive and make an impact in a medium that many people think is outdated is incredibly exciting.'
Arden-Miller's Self Portrait at 16 shows the artist in her school years, surrounded by a soft blue haze, the textures of her skin, clothing and hair delicately rendered through her smooth and masterful application of oil paint on canvas.
