Hogging the Bathroom, 2021Oil on linen panel41 x 31 cm
16 1/8 x 12 1/4 in£ 875.00This is a self portrait, painted in a tiled bathroom. I'm interested in the fall of light on white ceramic surfaces, as well as exploring the portrayal of women. The brushes in the jar are a nod to the painter's brushes, and the towel to the role of headgear in historic portraits In my paintings, I am interested in low light levels in interior spaces, in available light, and in the particular qualities of people, places and particularly in objects, or ‘the thingness of things’ as described by Pablo Neruda. Jugs, vessels, implements – the ordinary things of the shelf or table, and how we interact with them as humans. I am interested in working with contemporary versions of timeless items, and at looking at continuums, juxtapositions and changes within the minutiae of everyday life.Self Portrait Prize 2023
