This self-portrait was inspired by Oskar Kokoschka’s 'Self-portrait of a Degenerate Artist', painted in 1937. My version, painted earlier this year, was a response to the rising tides of fascism in my home country, the US, and my adopted home of the Netherlands. In regards to this piece and in my work more generally, I’m interested in the meanings our society projects onto the human face and figure, how these attitudes change across time and in different cultures, and what it means to live in those bodies.
