My modest self-portrait is deliberately small scale and muted in colour. I wanted to make something more private and different from my public works that tend to be monumental, whilst making an essay about scale and how our works define us: I look in the mirror, seeing only my face, I contrast this with myself at work in the studio dwarfed or outnumbered by my works, finishing the patina of my sculpture of two feet just before their installation in Park Lane where in contrast they are seen by thousands of passers-by every day. I have used the format of the quadriptych to show that my practice is complex: I paint, sculpt and make many drawings, and they are all part of my identity. But the self-portrait makes me pause for a moment and look at myself, cleansed of ambition. I can only show what I am and what I do. I am middle aged. I make large sculptures of feet and upside-down people that are displayed in central London. I usually paint very large canvases. I sit on the floor and make hundreds of drawings. But why?
