"This self-portrait is part of a series exploring #mirrorselfie culture. Inspired by the social media trend of individuals capturing their own image in a mirror with their mobile phone, the painting considers how phones shape identity. I was interested in how the phone has evolved beyond being a simple photographic tool to an object that takes a central role in the composition, often obscuring parts of the subject’s face.
For this painting, I worked from a photograph I took of myself in the mirror. I digitally manipulated the image to remove background distractions, focusing solely on the relationship between myself and my phone. I wanted the narrative to centre on this interaction rather than on incidental environmental details.
This self-portrait is a reflection on how we present ourselves through social media. Posting images of the self has become an integral part of our personal narratives."
