"Referring to a Rembrandt portrait painted when he was the age I am now, and the inevitable reflections on changed perspective, circumstances, unrealised ambitions as well as appearance when one paints a self portrait. I began painting late, so don't have a long artistic career behind me. I occasionally make a self portrait, as a discipline, part of the tradition of figurative painters and for the exercise in taking stock.
Here I am in an abstraction of my studio. There is a nod to the circles in Rembrandt's painting in a representation of two small cross-stitch pieces from my daughter, which hang behind me."
