"This painting was painted in the studio in my house in London. The country was in lockdown and the isolation meant that I could not paint portraits from life, except in my own home. As a painter, I try to foreground perception as a complex active process. It is not a social portrait but an unblinking examination of my face and the colours in the room. It is more about painting than it is about me. Yet, confronting myself in turn confronts the viewer. It is accidental non-judgemental testimony. It is alienating in one sense, but the scene is bathed in warm light which acts to counterbalance the feeling of detachment, in a place I love.
