I set up my easel by a field of pigs in Norfolk and painted them from first hand, later adding the self portrait using a mirror. The pinks of the sky that evening somewhat echoed the colours of the pigs. Pigs have an anthropomorphic quality, especially as they were looking at me here and this made me consider and question the relationship between humans and animals, because, of course, we know that these pigs are destined to become food. This painting also expresses the way I felt at this particular time more generally, ie a bit stuck and needing to make a few changes. A few weeks later the pigs were moved on and are no longer ocupying this field. It was time for pastures new for both them and me.
