Artistic Statement
Alexi Williams Wynn’s practice explores the nature of her own corporeality through an exploration into the hidden nature of the body’s makeup. Working directly from cadavers of animals she employs various casting techniques to give form to the formless spaces within the body. For Inner Self II she transforms a breath within the body into woods metal, a fragile low melting alloy originally used in the 17th C by the first anatomists. In Chinese medicine metal is the element of the lungs which is seen as the seat of grief within the human body.
The fundamental connection between Williams Wynn and her place in the world materializes into a play of opposites that speaks of her sense of disconnection from the natural world and the duality inherent in it.
