I studied Shotokan Karate in the 1980s for 20 years and I became a Brown Belt. Hence, I thought it would be appropriate to do a neon of me doing a Martial Arts Shotokan Kick. In the 80s, when I was being taught this Martial Art by a traditional Japanese instructor, as women we were all very much concerned about the slogan "self-defense is no offense" which is very appropriate of the times we're living in considering all the violence against women. So, I thought this piece was resonant of not only the past but also of the current times that we are living in now.
As for the aesthetic of the piece, I've recently been very much involved in neons. It seems to suit my mark-making, sense of colour, energy and style of composition. As a new way of presenting self-portraiture, I thought this piece can bring light into our lives being a feminist statement.
