25 and Counting Again, 2023Oil and acrylic on canvas122 x 92 cm
48 x 36 1/4 in25 and Counting Again: Four years ago I painted a piece of my parents, titled '25 and Counting', referring to the amount of years they had been married. Now, I reflect on the time that has passed since then, the reality of my current situation opposed to the expectations I saw for myself by this time. I am now 25 (and counting) and still living at home, still trying to feel secure in my career as an artist, and still struggling with the ideas of 'growing up'. Artist Statement: I specifically focus on people and the mindset from my own generation, and what it means to be a young person in Britain today. Often clinging to visuals and ideology from childhood and cinema, the artworks juxtapose this imagery with a harsher reality, of careers, relationships, social media, and the expectations of 'growing up'. As a result, a melancholic, warped form of nostalgia remains. The fractured and overlapping nature of my paintings convey a sense of life and movement over time, and explores the relationship between traditional painting and technology using 'glitches'.Self Portrait Prize 2023
