Red shoes and Palette Knife, 2008Oil on linen183 x 122 cm
72 x 48 inI paint about the human condition, the psychological affect of life, the family, the boys on the table ,under the table, the affect of living in the country with children, trapped in the kitchen. I paint about women in their houses having to obsess about their interiors, such as Madame Bovary. I spent many years doing the habitat of the studio, the gloves on the floor, the patina of paint on the pots, the rags, the tubes of paint. I have painted memory pieces, my early childhood in Australia being brought up in the theatre watching Ibsen and Chekhov and Strindberg have coloured my work , as they were often about educated woman yet unable to work as they were the possession of their husband along with the furniture and the house. In my French studio there is a different light, and here I paint the roses, exuberant bunches of flowers and the French Interior. The nude painting is in response to Lucien Feud's full frontal in hob nail boots and a palette knife. In my painting I wear Red platform shoes while brandishing a palette knife. Behind me is a painting of me as a child with my mother.Self Portrait Prize 2023
