During my ‘George Rowlett at 80’ exhibition at Art Space Gallery in May 2022 I included a self-portrait and was commissioned to paint another to hang with a Kossoff self-portrait in an important private collection. Coincidentally I had been given the Stokes' paint left in Leon Kossoff’s studio by Peggy Kossoff. I've used Stokes' paint ever since my years as a student in the 1960's, although I now supplement it with Spectrum Alizarin Crimson and Ultramarine. I decided for poignant reasons to use Leon's paint to carry out the commission and ended up making a group of four works of varying sizes painted at different times of day (for varying light conditions) in my studio in Walmer, Kent. One of identical size to the Kossoff now hangs beside it in the private collection. This painting I am submitting for the Ruth Borchard Prize is the largest of the group.
