I fear my work may appear somewhat self absorbed. I paint, draw and print myself over and over again. In the piece you see before you today I have painted myself in acrylic on a sheet on 10mm MDF. My biggest realisation of the past year has been that I cannot truthfully make work about what I have not yet experienced. So, I use myself as a motif, I compose myself to try and create an honest representation of how I experience the world. By trying to understand myself, physically and emotionally I hope to create compositions in which the viewer can see a reflection of themselves. My work often begins as a video of myself exploring lighting, clothing, textures, temperatures or an environment. Then I will take snap shots, moments in time that I can draw from. From there I make a painting, starting from the figure I will build a composition and then carve it out of the board, framing it with palette knife and paint. There is something peculiar about the way we view ourselves in the world and it is that peculiarity which I am interested in exploring.
