From Self Portrait to Summer Exhibition

15 Next Generation Artists included in the 2020 RA Summer/Winter Exhibition

Amongst the myriad of works currently exhibited as part of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition the inclusion of over fifteen works by Next Generation artists provides a stark reminder of the unique ability of self portraiture to unite all artists, whatever their normal practice, through a moment of self reflection.

From over 4000 initial submissions and subsequently chosen for the exhibition, works by 2015 self-portrait prize winner, Shanti Panchal as well as Next Generation artists Michael Ajerman, Anthony Eyton RA, Tracey Emin RA, Eileen Cooper RA, Anthony Green, Tai Schan Schierenberg, Tony Bevan RA, Philip Sutton RA, Marcelle Hanselaar, Julie Held, Marco Livingstone, Amanda Ewbank,  Geraldine Swayne and Eugenie Vronskaya.

First acquired by the Next Generation Collection after submitting a self portrait to the self portrait prize, emerging artist, Amanda Ewbank, describes how the ‘opportunity and exposure gained through the prize became a platform for further success’.

Since having her work acquired by the Collection, Ewbank has gained new confidence in her practice, taking on new projects and achieving further critical success.
