In making this piece I was interested in attempting to achieve the way both Hellenistic and Quattrocento Renaissance portraits convey a sense of presence and specificity. This work was carved directly by eye and hand from one block of marble without the use of pointing machine or other means of mechanically transferring the design, an atypical and laborious process not usually employed in portraiture.
