The painting is an exploration of processes and historical technique and the intersection with the present and oneself within one’s own painting practice.
The building in the background is a reversed (mirror) image of another painting that was completed earlier this year, from a series of works about Veduta painting in Venice.
The blue of the shirt is meant as a modernist colour element, to contrast against the tonal chiaroscuro of the historical architectural elements within the painting. The type of blue used is also a reference to historical painting, as the shirt is painted entirely with genuine Lapis Lazuli ultramarine.
