The Self-Portrait Prize 2017
The Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize
May – September 2017
Returning to Kings Place for its fourth edition, the biennial Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize features 100 works by British and Irish artists, showcasing the very best of contemporary self-portraiture.
Run by the Ruth Borchard Collection to celebrate twenty-first century British and Irish self-portraiture, the Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize offers a unique opportunity for new and established artists alike to compete for a £10,000 prize decided upon by a distinguished panel of judges. Previous winners of the Prize include Celia Paul (2011), Thomas Newbolt (2013), and Shanti Panchal (2015).
Submissions for the Prize will be open from 1 February – 12 April 2017 and can be made through the Ruth Borchard Collection website. The Prize is open to all artists living and working in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and accepts works in any recognised graphic medium including drawing, painting, watercolour, print and mixed media. A number of works will be purchased for the Ruth Borchard Next Generation Collection, as a means of continuing Ruth Borchard’s project into the twenty-first century.
The official museum partner for the 2017 Prize is The Lightbox Gallery, Woking, which will hold a simultaneous exhibition of the Ruth Borchard Original Collection. The Original Collection was brought together by Ruth Borchard in the 1950s and 1960s and includes 100 self-portraits by artists such as Euan Uglow, Roger Hilton and Francis Newton Souza.
